| Raku is based on a
technique that originated
in 16th century Japan.
Stoneware pots are painted with special
low-fire glazes. They are placed in an
outdoor propane-fueled kiln. When the glazes
are melted, the pots are pulled from the kiln
with tongs and covered with sawdust.
From the smoke and flames, the pots emerge
and are scrubbed to remove the ashes. The
glazes develop beautiful crackle patterns.
The unglazed areas are a soft black. Every
piece is unique.
Raku pottery is not safe for food. It is
meant for decorative purposes only.
